St Kilda
Overview
Spending many years living in Japan inspired this client to recreate their own piece of Japan here in Melbourne. For this family with four children traditional Japanese materials and finishes were specified to beautifully combine traditional Japanese design with modern Melbourne living.
Bathroom
Careful consideration was given into the creation of a traditional Japanese bathing experience in this, the clients main bathroom. The brief was to design a traditional ofuro, which is a traditional deep Japanese bath with step sides. The bath is filled with very warm or hot water to relax muscles and increase circulation. Because the whole family shares the water after a thorough wash, tradition dictates that washing with soap is done outside the bath while sat on a small wooden stool.
Penny mosaics line the bath and entire back wall of the ofuro and the bath is filled by a cascade waterfall filler concealed in the wall. A step at either end of the bath allows easy access and provides a space to sit. Imported Banksy graffiti tiles add a contemporary twist to the Japanese design. Rough sawn Oregon timber was selected for the steps up to the shower, and the vanity top which proudly displays a handmade black Claybrook Pebble basin. Rogerseller Eccentric tapware and designer Techtonic ceiling showers complete the functionality of this room while remaining discreetly understated. We ensured that we specified products that are extremely water, heat and steam resistant for this space.
Multipurpose Room
Beautiful Japanese shou sugi ban (charred timber cladding) lines the walls of this multipurpose room. Custom storage behind bifold doors houses a king futon and a stunning polished concrete floor completes the room. A desk provides a home office solution and oversized rustic barn doors finished in a black japan conceal the room when not in use. The remaining shou sugi ban was used in the childrens bedroom with custom floating shelving providing a place for all their treasures.
